Former Memphis Police Officer Convicted of Excessive Force.

I recently ran across a blog that I found to be both sad and disturbing. It was written by a young Teach for America student who was teaching at Melrose High School. If this isn’t a sad commentary on the state of education in this city I don’t know what is. Let’s stop ignoring the needs of schools in poor neighborhoods. Although I may not agree with everything he says, Thaddeus Mathews is another blogger who is calling out all the bad folks in the Bluff City. Give ‘em hell Thaddeus!

According to CQ Press, the Memphis Metro area is once again one of the most dangerous places in the U.S.  The Memphis MSA had the second highest metro crime rate. The only place higher was Pine Bluff, Arkansas.

The AP reports that, the University of Memphis refused on Wednesday to release the NCAA’s response to its appeal of a ruling that vacated the 2007-08 men’s basketball season.” What a surprise. I wouldn’t want anyone to know either.  When is someone going to get fired at Tiger High?

Tommy West may not be the best coach in D1 college football but he sure is the most honest. Say what you want about Tommy but he had more wins than the Memphis basketball program did last year because he ran an honest program. Tiger High is and will always be a joke but at least Tommy tried to make it something better and had more success than most of his predecessors. Additionally, I applaud him for not letting the good ole’ boys at Tiger High get by with their illusions of adequacy. I hope Tommy gets a better job in the future.

Usually one gets elected to Congress before he or she goes to jail. Slick Willie might skip all the formality of an election and go straight to jail. Former Memphis mayor Willie Herenton is now the target of a federal probe. An indictment would only serve to increase his popularity among his supporters.

Memphians don’t despair. You might finally have a leader who isn’t crazy…yet. Today marks a new era in Memphis as A.C. Wharton takes over as the new city mayor. Good luck.

In yet another in a series of embarrassing events, Memphis Mayor Lowery recently greeted the Dalai Lama with a ‘fist bump‘. Now I’m not slamming the fist bump. Actually, I have used it on occasion myself. However, shouldn’t Mayor Lowery have used a more formal greeting until he and the Dal-man had time to hang and throw down some beers?

Slick Willie is up to his old tricks saying that incumbent congressman Steve Cohen can’t represent the interests of blacks in Memphis. As if Willie EVER represented anyone’s interests other than his own. As usual Memphis will get what it deserves.
